The Bergen Research Foundation was founded in 2004 by means of a donation from Trond Mohn. In the years to come, the capital of the foundation has increased significantly, primarily as a result of new gifts from Trond Mohn, Marit Mohn and Frederik Mohn, and due to the merge of the three foundations; the Bergen Research Foundation, the Bergen Medical Research Foundation and the Frank Mohns Foundation, in 2014 .

Since the foundation was established, a total of NOK 829 million has been allocated for statutory purposes (as of 31 December 2017). At year-end 2017/2018, the Foundation’s equity was NOK 2 224 million.

In a Norwegian context, the gifts of the Mohn family are unique. They give the research communities an outstanding advantage in the long-term work of establishing research and building expertise at a high international level, both in Bergen and in the rest of Norway.
